My Mum
by Rui Kodemari
illus. by Mika Koshida
Marie’s mum can hardly see. But she’s an amazing shamisen player, she has great hearing, she’s brave, and she’ll go anywhere by herself. But one day, she stopped being able to see anything at all and it was the first time Marie ever saw her mum cry. This dynamically illustrated story is based in the real-life experience of the author. Kodemari’s wish is to show how disabilities don’t define a person: they are, and disabilities are, normal and manageable and nothing to be scared of.
