Izumi
by Rui Kodemari
Sara lost her mother at birth and was raised by her father. She became a writer and won a newcomer award for her debut novel, but struggled to maintain success afterward. Seeking new opportunities, she moves to the United States. While working at a retirement home, she befriends an elderly man named Daniel. However, when she learns that her father is critically ill, she returns to Japan. The story alternates between Sara’s life and a narrative within her story, about Izumi Tsubaki, a nurse who travels to France during World War I. The two narratives are linked by key words.
