A Haitian Folktale: I’m Tipingee, She’s Tipingee, We’re Tipingee, Too
retold by Hatsue Nakawaki
illus. by Azumimushi
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Tipingee who was living with a wicked step-mother because her own parents had died. Her step-mother promised Tipingee as a servant to a man, telling him to take the girl in the red dress at the well. But when he went to the well, every girl was wearing red, and every girl claimed to be Tipingee. Her story is part of this series of folklore heroines from around the world.
