Research for All

Faster Than Anyone Prosthetic Limb Research

by Ken Endo

illus. by Toshinori Yonemura

‘Research for All’ is a new non-fiction series looking at issues of interest in our modern society. This instalment is by Ken Endo, a biomechanical researcher at MIT. He explains how prosthetic limb technology has the potential to open up all kinds of possibilities, not least enabling athletes with prosthetic legs to overtake non-disabled athletes. In the ‘new normal’ Ken and his peers are working towards, prosthetic limbs can be faster and more efficient than human limbs, thereby changing how we see them in relationship to our own bodies.
