The second instalment in this long-form mystery series sees Ikaru, a girl appointed to work in a museum in Ueno, take army chief Isao Oyama and his fiancée on a tour of the museum. Ikaru is drawn to the fiancée, Sutematsu, and her fascinating life. Ikaru ends up being sent to the Oyama’s residence to both educate a child and investigate strange phenomena that have been occurring. This atmospheric novel is inspired by real-life characters: Sutematsu was the first Japanese woman ever to graduate from an American university.
