Katsumi Yamazaki

Manga (cartoon) artist. Born in Tokyo in 1954.

Began his career as an illustrator for magazines. In 1986, won the 15th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards with Gyoza Dokuhon (The Meat Dumpling Reader) (Shicho-Sha). He is renowned for his unique technique, which he calls shikokue, where he uses a chisel to carve out shapes on thick paper before adding line and colour. In recent years he has also been active as a picture book author, and is active in exhibiting his works.
