For Edo boys, getting their first proper chonmage, with a top knot and shaved forehead, was a sign of becoming a man. So what went on up top until then? This unusual picture book introduced the rituals and rules of hair in the Edo period (1603-1867), painting a picture of the complexity and aesthetics of this bygone age.
