Sleep, God, In the Forest of the Moon
by Nahoko Uehashi
In this tale set in medieval Japan a village is faced with the choice of whether to start growing rice in order to avoid the onerous labour service demanded by the central government. But, the only land suitable for paddy-field cultivation is a marsh in the sacred Forest of the Moon, where the villagers risk incurring the wrath of the god.
