Rock Ptarmigan
by Gaku Totsuka
supervised by Teruyuki Komiya
The rock ptarmigan is designated a Special Natural Treaure in Japan. It has long been revered as divine, due to its alpine tundra habitat and the way it turns bright white in winter. This intimate portrait of the rock ptarmigan is thanks to the dedication of the author-photographer, Gaku Totsuka, who has visited the birds season after season to capture their life cycle, and is now working to conserve this precious and endangered species.
