Oil Beetle

by Hiroshi Tateno

The oil beetle might look quite dull, but it has one of the most extraordinary life cycles in the insect kingdom. Its tiny larvae, just one millimetre long, must somehow find their way inside bee nests, where they feed on eggs, pollen, and nectar until mature enough to emerge, mate, and begin the cycle again. This book is the result of eight years of research by the author, and features detailed illustrations and photography capturing the oil beetle’s short life, a four-day battle of survival and determination.
