My Uncle
by Kazumi Yumoto
illus. by Makoto Ueda
A little girl meets a little boy, her uncle who never had the chance to grow up. Ko tells his niece about many things she doesn’t yet know but will come to find out. Ueda’s dream-like illustrations evoke the world they live in—her mother’s heart, his sister’s heart—perfectly, while Yumoto transforms the seemingly difficult subject of what comes before and after life into a bittersweet and beautiful tale of love, longing, and loss. Yumoto’s awards include the 1997 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for her novel The Friends, which also won two literary prizes in Japan and is today available in translation in more than a dozen countries worldwide.
