Kitakami River
by Akira Muramatsu
This latest edition of the “Japanese Rivers” series introduces Kitakami River, the largest river in Tohoku. The author, Akira Muramatsu, is a panoramic cartographer who specialises in drawing the rivers of Japan. Kitakami River stretches 249km through the northern Tohoku region, and Muramatsu – or, rather his narrators, a young Emishi boy and a divinity in clay figurine form – take us along its entire length, highlighting the history and heritage, construction and destruction, and culture and civilisation that has happened alongside and together with it.
