Commander of the Kairo Brigade: Three Graduates of Horakuma School
by Hiroshi Masumura
paw and foot prints provided by Kenji Miyazawa
Author-illustrator Hiroshi Masumura presents adaptations of two tales by Kenji Miyazawa, a children’s author renowned for the fantasy and poignancy of his works and a personal inspiration to Masumura. These manga versions, populated with the magical woodland creatures of Japanese folklore, will captivate children and adults alike with their warmth and playfulness, while communicating one of Miyazawa’s deeply held beliefs: the value of working together joyfully. After winning the Shonen Jump Tezuka Award in 1973, Masumura went on to win the Japan Cartoonists Association Grand Prize in 1997 for Atagoal Tamatebako and the Ihatov Award by the Miyazawa Kenji Association in 2001 for his adaptations of Miyazawa’s work.
