Hisae Kido is the author of So Far from That War, an award-winning biographical account of her father’s early life as a war orphan, having been left by his Japanese family in China. On becoming a mother herself, Kido felt compelled to write a version for younger readers as a way of preserving her family history, a history inextricably intertwined with the devastating geopolitics of the mid-twentieth century. Written as if she were telling her father’s story to her own son, this is a compelling story: of suffering, determination, and ultimately hope.
