30 Senegal – Madeleine of Shell Island

Madeleine is a hard-working, style-loving eleven year old who lives on a tiny island, made entirely of oyster shells, in the Atlantic Ocean. She has to cross a bridge to the mainland to go to school, where the children eat fresh figs straight from the tree in between classes. The food, religion, and family life found on this Senegalese island are captured in vivid colour in this intimate introduction to Madeleine’s everyday life, part of a round-the-world series.
