After studying English Literature at university, she worked for a publishing company where she specialized in editing children’s literature. In 1974 she started devoting herself to creative writing. She is known for the bold ideas and strong structures that she uses in her fantasy stories. She has won the Noma Award for Children’s Literature and the Shogakukan Cultural Prize in Publishing for Children’s Literature. A noted writer of children’s fantasy, Sueyoshi prefers a sharp, concise style to lyrical prose. Her stories generally have a modern setting, and succeed by detailed description and by mixing the fantasy with a high degree of realism.
